Beinecke Scholarship (nomination required)

Beinecke scholars receive $4,000 upon completion of their undergraduate studies, and $30,000 for graduate study in the arts, humanities, and social sciences.  The nominee should represent superior standards of intellectual ability, scholastic achievement, and personal promise, and demonstrate financial need.   Campus deadline: December 16, 2014

David L. Boren Scholarships (undergraduates) and Fellowships (graduate)

The awards provide funding to U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to study abroad in non–Western European countries critical to national security which will have some language-learning component.  There is a service requirement associated with the award.  Undergraduates will have a campus deadline in advance of the national deadline.

Awards for:
a) Freshman and sophomores: usually for intensive summer or semester study-abroad programs to foster their interest in international affairs;

b) Juniors and seniors: for a semester or year, to increase their knowledge of and competencies in other languages and cultures

c)  Graduate students: to develop expertise in the languages and cultures of less commonly studied countries.

DAAD — German Academic Exchange Service

DAAD offers a variety of awards to support study and experiential learning in Germany, both during the academic year and summers.  There are programs available to non-German speakers, those that require at least advanced-intermediate proficiency, as well as those requiring fluency.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program

This program offers a grant for study abroad for U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding.  The Gilman scholarship aims to support students who have been traditionally underrepresented in study abroad.  Undergraduates will have a campus deadline in advance of the national deadline.

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program (nomination required)

For those who have records of scholarly accomplishment and demonstrated interest in and potential for outstanding careers in mathematics and the sciences.  The scholarship covers eligible expenses for tuition, fees, books, and room and board to a maximum of $7,500 per academic year.  Campus Deadline: December 2, 2014

Harvard Summer Venture in Management Program

The Harvard Business School (HBS) Summer Venture in Management Program (SVMP) is a one week management training program for rising college seniors designed to increase diversity and opportunity in business education. This unique educational experience helps participants develop a broader understanding of the challenges business leaders face, the many dimensions of the business world, and the impact they can have on their community and the world through business leadership.  SVMP participants must be employed in a summer internship and be nominated by and have sponsorship from their company or organization to attend. Given the current economic climate, finding a summer internship is going to be challenging. We strongly recommend that you start looking today. Sponsoring organizations can include public or private companies, government agencies or entities, and non-profit organizations.

  • Applicant must be a rising senior during the summer experience.

Harvard Latino Leadership Initiative

The weeklong program at Kennedy Harvard School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is designed to enhance the leadership capacity and understanding of a cadre of students committed to serving the Latino community.

  • Applicants must be in the summer between the junior and senior year of their undergraduate studies, plan to be on campus for their entire senior year and have a demonstrated interest and track record of community and school involvement in helping to serve the Latino community.

Hispanic Scholarship Fund

The HSF is for community college or undergraduate students with plans to enroll fulltime at a two- or four-year U.S. accredited institution in the U.S., Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, or Guam in the upcoming academic year.

  • Be a U.S. citizen, legal permanent resident with a permanent resident card or valid passport stamped I-551, or be granted Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status

Hollings Scholarships

The Hollings Scholarship Program provides successful undergraduate applicants with awards that include academic assistance (up to a maximum of $8,000 per year) for full-time study during the 9-month academic year; a 10-week, full-time internship position ($650/week) during the summer at a NOAA facility; and, if reappointed, academic assistance (up to a maximum of $8,000) for full-time study during a second 9-month academic year.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Undergraduate Scholarship Program (UGSP) offers competitive scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral, and social science health-related research.

NOAA-Northern Gulf Institute Diversity Internship

The NOAA-Northern Gulf Institute Diversity Internship Program is a 10-week, summer program open to undergraduate and graduate students who are currently enrolled in a degree-granting program. These internships provide career exploration in a variety of fields studied by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Northern Gulf Institute (NGI) scientists including coastal science, fisheries management, climate change, etc.

Public Policy & International Affairs (PPIA)

The goal of the PPIA Fellowship Program is to help students achieve a Master’s or joint degree, typically in public policy, public administration, international affairs or a related field. The organization does this through the intensive study provided by participation in a Junior Summer Institute (JSI), through partnerships with universities across the country, and through an alumni network that provides opportunities to connect with nearly 4000 individuals who share the same interest in public service.

  • Applicant must be a junior.

  • Applicant must be a U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident to apply to all PPIA/JSI programs.

  • UC Berkeley can accept applications from those who qualify and meet CA State AB-540 guidelines.

  • Princeton can accept applications from international students studying at U.S. institutions.

 

Schepp Scholarships

The Foundation grants approximately 200 individual awards each year to both full-time undergraduate students enrolled in four-year bachelor programs and to full time graduate students. The Foundation also grants a small number of fellowship awards for independent study and research, usually post-doctoral, based on the recommendation of a recognized institution. These fellowships are intended to encourage research that will improve the general welfare of mankind. Because funds for such grants are limited, interested applicants should inquire as to the availability of funding for fellowships in their chosen field of study.

  • Undergraduates must be under 30 and U.S. Citizens or permanent residents.

  • Undergraduates & pre-dissertation graduate students are eligible to apply.

 

Harry S. Truman Scholarship (nomination required)

The college nominates students for Truman Scholarships.  To be eligible, a student must be a Junior who has an extensive record of public and community service; is committed to a career in government or elsewhere in the public sector; wishes to influence public policy; has leadership potential, and intellectual strength. Each scholarship covers eligible expenses up to $30,000. The application will include an analysis of a public policy issue.  There is a service requirement associated with the awards.  The college may nominate up to four students (plus two transfer students from community college).  Campus Deadline: December 2, 2014

  • Applicant must be a junior.

  • Applicant must be a U.S. citizen.

 

Udall Scholarship (nomination required)

The awards will be made to two groups of students: students who have outstanding potential and who study the environment and related fields, or Native American and Alaska Native students who have outstanding potential and are in fields related to health care or tribal public policy.  Award: Up to $5,000.  The college may nominate up to six students.  Campus deadline: January 13, 2015

US-UK Fulbright Summer Institutes

Jeanette Watson

The Jeannette K. Watson Fellowship is a three-year program which provides summer internships, mentoring, and enriched educational opportunities to promising students from our twelve New York City partner institutions with the goal of increasing their life choices and developing their capacity to make a difference in their own and others’ lives.
