Winston Churchill Foundation (nomination through Macaulay)

The Winston Churchill Foundation Scholarships are awarded for one year of study at Churchill College, Cambridge in a variety of fields in the sciences, mathematics, and engineering. The scholarship covers tuition and fees and provides a living allowance and an allowance for travel to and from the United Kingdom. Applicants are expected to be students of exceptional academic achievement with outstanding personal qualities and with a demonstrated capacity to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in their chosen field of study.  Nomination by Macaulay is required and is available only to MHC students; campus deadline in advance of the national deadline, which is November 11, 2014.

  • Applicant must be a U.S. citizen.

  • Applicant may be a senior or recent graduate.

  • Scholars must be between the ages of 19 and 26 when taking up the award.

 

Gates Cambridge Scholars

The scholarships are highly competitive full-cost scholarships.  They are awarded to outstanding applicants from countries outside the UK to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge.  The program is designed to build a global network of future leaders committed to improving the lives of others.  There are two rounds:  one for U.S. citizens, one for citizens of other countries.

Marshall Scholarships (nomination required)

Up to forty college graduates are selected annually to study for two years at British universities in a wide range of subjects.  As future leaders, with a lasting understanding of British society, Marshall Scholars strengthen the enduring relationship between the British and American peoples, their governments and their institutions.  Candidates are advised to begin preparing their applications well in advance.  Campus deadline: September 2, 2014.

  • Applicant must be a U.S. citizen.

  • Applicant must have a GPA of not less than 3.7/4.0 and have earned a first undergraduate degree less than two years before application.

  • Seniors and recent alumni are eligible to apply.

 

George J. Mitchell Scholarship (nomination required of current seniors)

Up to twelve Mitchell Scholars are chosen annually for one year of post-graduate study at institutions of higher learning in Ireland and Northern Ireland.  Prospective Scholars must be no more than 30 years old and have a demonstrated record of intellectual distinction, leadership, and extra-curricular activities, as well as personal characteristics of honesty, integrity, fairness, and unselfish service to others, which indicate a potential for future leadership and contribution to society.  Campus Deadline: September 2, 2014

  • Applicant must be a U.S. citizen.

  • Applicant cannot yet be 30 years of age by the date of application.

  • Candidate may be a senior, recent graduate, current graduate student, or hold a graduate degree.

 

National Institutes of Health, graduate (Oxford & Cambridge)

Students undertake a collaborative Ph.D. project in any area of biomedical investigation with two research mentors–one at the NIH intramural campus in Bethesda, MD and one at either Oxford or Cambridge Universities in the United Kingdom. Students conduct research at both locations and potentially other sites including field work in Africa and elsewhere around the world.  Awards fully fund tuition and stipend.  Students may also pursie a combined MD/PhD with funded partnerships at a broad range of U.S. medical school in the NIH MD/PhD Partnership Training Program.

  • Applicant must be U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

 

Rhodes Scholarship (nomination required)

Rhodes scholars have pursued studies in all of the varied fields available at the University of Oxford.  Rhodes Scholars are chosen not only for their outstanding scholarly achievements, but also for the character, commitment to others and to the common good, and for their potential for leadership in whatever domains their careers may entail.  Appointment is for two years of graduate study at Oxford, with the possibility of renewal for a third year.  All educational costs (tuition, accommodation, and stipend) are covered.  Deadline: September 2, 2014

  • Applicant must be a U.S. citizen to compete for awards offered through the office of the American Secretary of the Rhodes Trust.

  • Applicant must be a senior, recent graduate, or graduate student.

  • A U.S. applicant must be at least 18 but not yet 24 years old by the date of application.

  • Citizens of other jurisdictions should check the Rhodes Trust site for competition information.
