The awards provide funding to U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to study abroad in non– Western European countries critical to national security which will have some language-learning component.  Undergraduates will have a campus deadline in advance of the national deadline.

Awards for:

a) Freshman and sophomores: usually for intensive summer or semester study-abroad programs to foster their interest in international affairs;

b) Juniors and seniors: for a semester or year, to increase their knowledge of and competencies in other languages and cultures

c)  Graduate students: to develop expertise in the languages and cultures of less commonly studied countries.

Critical Language Scholarship (undergraduates and graduate students are eligible)

The Critical Language Scholarship provides intensive overseas study in the critical need foreign languages of Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Punjab, Russian, Turkish and Urdu.  The program is part of a US government effort to expand dramatically the number of Americans studying and mastering critical need foreign languages.  Undergraduates, masters and doctoral level students of diverse majors and disciplines are encouraged to apply for the seven to ten week program.  Participants are expected to continue their language study beyond the scholarship period and later apply their critical language skills in their future professional careers.

DAAD — German Academic Exchange Service

DAAD offers a variety of awards in many disciplines, including the visual and performing arts, to support study and experiential learning in Germany, both during the academic year and summers.  There are programs available to non-German speakers, those that require at least advanced-intermediate proficiency, as well as those requiring fluency.

  • Undergraduates at all levels & graduate students are eligible to apply.

 

Fulbright Grant

Grants give U.S. students the opportunity to live and study in a foreign country for one academic year to increase mutual understanding between the people of the U.S. and the host countries though the exchange of persons, knowledge, and skills.  Selection is based on the academic and/or professional record of the applicant, the validity and feasibility of the proposed study or research plan, the applicant’s foreign language preparation, and personal qualifications.

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Graduate Arts Award

The Award of up to $50,000 annually enables students or recent alumni with exceptional artistic or creative promise and significant financial need to pursue up to three years of study at an accredited graduate institution in the US or abroad.

  • Applicant must have demonstrated financial need.

  • Non-U.S. citizens may apply.
